Wifi Issues

Image
Wifi issues By Jessica Troxell   Those Bluetooth speakers might be one reason why your Wi-Fi is slow. The speakers, along with using your phone hotspot, printer, and other devices, are considered “rogue” devices that can connect through a smartphone and can interfere with the Wi-Fi signal, according to representatives from IT on campus.  Peppino Muraca  the manager of network services   and Ryan Miranda  the senior user support specialist , said Wi-Fi is strong on campus – holding around ten bandwidths of data at one time. This means that the wifi can hold a large amount of devices at one time. However, the “rogue’ devices on a campus with so many users can interfere with that. While generally, these devices don’t interfere with wifi at one's home in a concentrated area like a dorm it can weaken signals. The increase in rogue devices makes it harder for the wifi signal to transmit clearly. Stonehill is supplied with internet on campus throug...

Mice are Back at the Commons

Image
Jessica Troxell  Mice are back at the Commons Mice have been spotted in the Commons dining area yet again, despite assurances to parents over the summer that the mouse problem was handled. This year, on several different occasions students have spotted and photographed mice within the dining area. Most of these instances have been documented on Yik Yak, accompanied by clever phrases such as “my boy Remy is looking a little washed up these days” which was posted on September 29. While the comments may be comical, a mouse infestation is a serious issue. Mice can carry many diseases, the most concerning being Hantavirus and Tularemia. Food contaminated by mice can cause serious issues such as fever, abdominal pain, muscle aches, sore throat, vomiting, and, in some extreme cases, death, as the CDC states.  Last semester, there was an infestation of mice within the Commons, where students saw mice on the food counters. After complaints from both students and parents, Stonehi...

Pond Cleanup efforts

Image
By: Jessica Troxell Pond Cleanup  Declining water levels in the Stonehill Pond revealed a few surprises apparently left by students. There was a bike, a coffee maker, a beach chair and a section of a wall, among other things Facilities employees were able to remove from the bottom of the pond. Stonehill Facilities Associate Director Paul Ricci said they are aware of the problem and try to clean the pond at least twice a year, but people need to stop dumping items there. “Everyone can play a part in keeping our campus and our environment clean and trash-free,” he said. The items found recently were near the entrance of the school, with most of the items were found underneath the red bridge. The pond near the entrance to Stonehill is home to several types of wildlife including, swans, ducks, geese, and turtles which can have negative effects from the debris in their habitat.

Put up a Parking Lot!

Jessica Troxell                                                             Put up a Parking Lot             When deciding to go to college there are a lot of factors that people take into account tuition cost, campus life, education, but one factor that a majority of people fail to take into account (including Stonehill College) is parking. There are nine parking lots on campus for students: Duffy (only on the weekends), Commuter lot, Lot 17, Boland, Commons lot, Heights, Villa, Du Lac, and the Sem. While at first glance this may seem like a lot of areas to park in actuality the parking at a majority of these places is very limited...

Raw Chicken

Image
Jessica Troxell   Raw Chicken             Students getting ready to eat were stunned recently to find the chicken fingers at the dining hall were far from cooked and took their complaints to YikYak.             One student posted photos of what appeared to be raw chicken on the anonymous social network  on Sept. 9  and others have also complained             “Since when did the hill give out breathing chicken,” the anonymous poster said Soon after, other students said they were also served raw chicken..             The new company managing food services at Stonehill, Bon Appetite, admitted there was a cooking error but the situation was addressed after learning about the problem.  Eating food that is cooked improperly is very dangerous, es...
